Christmas Eve Chocolate Cake

2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1 cup water
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs; beaten
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla
icing ingredients
1/2 cup butter or margarine
1/4 cup cocoa
6 tablespoons milk
1 box powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts

Cake: Sift flour and sugar together. Bring butter, shortening, water and cocoa to a boil in a sauce pan. Pour over flour mixture while still hot. Add buttermilk, eggs, soda and vanilla. Spoon into a large baking sheet with sides. Bake in a 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. Ice cake while still hot. Icing: Combine butter, cocoa and milk in a saucepan; bring to a boil. Remove from heat. Add powdered sugar, vanilla and nuts. Mix well. This recipe from the "Flat Rock Cookbook".
