Lemon Plum Compote

1 lemon; scrubbed
1 pound plums, quartered; about 3 cups
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
12 peppercorns
4 whole cloves

Cut ends off lemon; discard. Cut lemon into 14-inch (5 mm) thick slices, removing any seeds; place in saucepan. Add plums, 1 1/2 cups water, sugar, peppercorns and cloves; bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer until plums are tender, 15 minutes. Let cool. Serve at room temperature, discarding lemon, peppercorns and cloves.
