Barbecued Tofu

bbq, tofu

1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 small onion; chopped
1 clove garlic; minced
3/4 cup ketchup
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 package (12 oz) extra-firm tofu

In saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; cook onion and garlic, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until softened. Add ketchup, vinegar, sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder and cayenne pepper; boil gently for 10 minutes or until thickened. Meanwhile, cut tofu into 1-inch cubes; place in bowl. Pour hot sauce over tofu. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or for up to 24 hours. Shaking off excess sauce, thread tofu onto skewers. Place on greased grill over medium-high heat; close lid and cook, turning 4 times, for 8 to 10 minutes or until browned. Meanwhile, heat remaining sauce to serve alongside if desired.
